Chapter 3

The past few days have been hectic.  Maybe not for you, Alfred or Kiku, but Arthur was extremely stressed.  Probably at the same extent as a bull being taunted by matador with a red cape.  There were times where steam practically started to come out from his ears.

Today was the day, or more like the night, that you all took off on Arthur's first investigation, so he was scrambling everywhere, organizing his material and making sure he has everything.  This explains why he is stressed.  He would walk from room to room, either entering the main room, where the rest of you where sitting, smiling and boasting about what great progress he was making then leave with a grouchy attitude because he forgot something, or vice versa.  There was a time where Alfred accidentally bumped into something of his and moved a couple of things.  He received the biggest scolding from Arthur, whom afterwards turned back to place them back where they were.

At times like these, you have learned to just stay out of his way.  Any little detail that could set him off would, and you do not want to be around when he blows up.

"________-chan...?"  Kiku looked over to you, worry expressed in his eyes.  He was clenching onto his light colored, silk pants, causing them to wrinkle around where he was doing so.

"Yeah?"  you responded, slight nervousness in your voice.  ‘D-don’t get me wrong!  It’s not I have a crush on him!  N-no…  Arthur is just very scary when he is like this so…  That is the reason!  N-nothing else!’ This went through your head, as if someone could hear your thoughts.

"Is Arth-" he stopped him self, watching an angry Arthur stomp by the opening in the wall that was closest to his room. Once he was out of sight for about five seconds, Kiku lowered the volume of his voice down to a whisper. "Is Arthur always like this when preparing for something?"

You raised your eyebrows and shrugged.

"All of the time.  You should have seen him when we were packing to come here.  He was a wreck."  You shivered, remembering how wild his temper was.

"A wreck?"  Kiku asked confused.  He had his head tilted to the side, his straight, black bangs shifted to the side a bit, following his motion. He looked so cute when he does that.

That's right.  There are terms that you are used to hearing that Kiku is not.  He grew up in a different environment than you did.

"A wreck.  It is kind of like a disaster."

Kiku made an "ah" sound and nodded his head.

"That is one of the things that I don't miss living with that stuck up English dude.  He always got so ticked off at everything.  I mean, EVERYTHING."  Alfred said in his normal loud voice.   He was sitting unlike Kiku and yourself.  Instead of having his legs tucked away underneath his body, he was sitting with his legs crossed in front of him and was leaning back, using his arms to support himself.  You could tell that he could care less if Arthur heard him or not.  He normally likes getting Arthur riled up because he thinks it is funny.

"Oh it's not that bad."  you said, trying to back up your brother.

"Really?  Really?"  Alfred said, looking at you with his eyes half shut behind his glasses, eyebrows up and a smug grin on his face.

You paused before responding, rubbing your hand on the back of your head, messing up your (hair color) hair.

"Uh... Well-"

"I am all set and ready to go!" Arthur somewhat yelled out, walking back into the main room.  He was wearing his normal attire.  A fancy, tucked in, dark green shirt, a pair of dark colored slacks and his brown penny loafers clothed him.  You sighed in relief, not having to admit anything.

"Awesome dude!"  Alfred yelled, jumping up off of the pillow where he was sitting out of pure excitement.  "Are we leaving now?!  I have been waiting ALL DAY!"

Arthur grinned, gaining some excitement of his own.

“Of course.  Why else would I come in here and inform you all that I am now ready?”  Your brother responded, a grin on his face.

Alfred jumped up and down in pure happiness.

“YAHOO!  Come one!  Lets go!”  Alfred yelled, running out the door, leaving his pillow thrown and the rug in a scrunched up mess.

Arthur sighed at your cousin’s actions then turned to look at Kiku.

“Are you sure that you are fine with us borrowing your car?”

Kiku slightly bowed his head and smiled that same smile.

“Hai. Please, use it as you please.  You need it to get around and complete your investigation.  It is the least that I can do in order to help you.”

Your brother smiled at Kiku and walked up to him.  He then put out his hand.
“Thank you Kiku.  You are quite the nice person.”

Kiku looked back up and grabbed his hand, a bit unsecure. Arthur shook it and then let go.

The formal, English man turned around and made his way over to the front door.  He lifted his hands and cupped them around his mouth.  The lamplight that was out on the front porch slightly illuminated his facial featured.  He began to yell out at Alfred.

“Hey you bloody nincompoop!  Don’t think that you can try and weasel your way out of carrying the equipment to the automobile!”

You heard Alfred respond.  Even though he was outside, down the pathway and already in the car, you heard him as if he were talking right into your ear.  That is how loud he speaks.

“Oh COME ON DUDE!  I am already out here!  Don’t make me go back again!”
Arthur groaned.

“Get off of your lazy bum and get over here!”

You watched Arthur sit there for a good five minutes before he stormed out, leaving the paper door open.  He returned no later than a minute stomping into the house, dragging a protesting Alfred behind him.  He began to walk to his left, making way to his and Alfred’s room. They both shared the same sleeping space. You could hear Alfred’s body make squeaking noises on the tatami mats.

You called out to him before he disappeared from your sight.

“Arthur, would you like me to help you as well?”  You asked, willing to offer as much help as possible.

He walked back and peered at you from around the corner.

“That would be lovely _________.  Thank you!  I will make sure to leave the lighter stuff for you.”  He said before continuing on his way.

Alfred just sat there the entire time with a pout on his face and his arms and legs crossed, even while he was being dragged.

“Coming Arthur!”  You responded standing up, your (hair color) hair shifting along with you.  You turned to face your Japanese friend, whom followed your pattern of movement.
“Aren’t you coming?”

Kiku shuck his head.

“Iie.  I need to stay home and clean.  Aside from that, I do not completely believe in ghosts and spirits personally, so I do not find any reason to go.  But I do wish you and your brother the greatest luck during your investigation.”  Kiku said calmly. His response seemed a bit off to you.  As if that weren’t the whole reason as to why he wouldn’t come, but you decided not to get into his personal space.

“All right then.  Arigato [1]  Kiku-kun!” You responded quite happily, showing your pearly whites.  You bowed from your hips up. Here in Japan, bowing is very important, and used very often. In this case, you are using it to show thanks.

“Dōitashimashite[2]  ______-chan” he said back in his native tongue.  He returned the bow with one that was a bit deeper.  You took that inclination that next time you should bow just as deep, showing him that you have the same amount of respect for him that he does you.

You smiled and turned around to leave.  You walked with a bit of pride, due to the fact that you had just successfully spoken to your Japanese friend in the dialect that he is accustomed to speak in.

You made your way in the genkan, did your daily footwear exchanging routine.  You switched from the soft and fluffy slippers that made you feel as if you were walking on clouds when you wore them, into your flexible tennis shoes.  You then got up and walked outside.  You skipped down the rock pathway, careful not to trip like your brother had a few days ago.  You turned the corner, making your way over to where Kiku had his car parked.

The moment you turned the corner your eyes caught sight of a little Honda car.  It wasn’t the smallest thing in the world, but it certainly was not the biggest either.  It was a light grey color. If someone who stereotypes Japanese people were to stumble upon it, they would definitely say that this is their car.

It seems that within the time you were staring at the cute, little car, Arthur had started the engine.

Alfred, who was in the front, left seat, rolled his window down and began to yell at you.
“Come on slowpoke!  Get in the back before we take off without ya!”  Alfred said, shaking his gloved fist in the air in the same manor as an old man who is scolding children to get off of his lawn would.

You saw Arthur remove his hands from the steering wheel and smack him up side the head, leaving the silly, tall man hunched over and holding on to his cranium.

“Quiet you bloody git!  I would not leave my little sister behind while I brought her here to research with me!” he said in an agitated tone, staring down at him with an evil glare.

Alfred hissed at the pain and rolled his eyes.

“Yeah yeah I know that!  She is just so stinking slow!  I was only trying to get her to hurry up dude!”

“I’m sorry Alfred!  I’ll hurry and get into the back” You said as you quickly scrambled into the backseat.  You then put your seatbelt on and made yourself comfortable.

Once Arthur heard your seatbelt click, he pushed down the gas petal with his brown penny loafer covered foot and began to drive.

You have left Kiku’s house a quite a few times in the past ten days that you have been here now, so you are beginning to recognize and distinguish locations and things.  You believe that if someone were to drop you off in the middle of town, you would be able to find your way back to Kiku’s house with no guidance.

“So we are heading to Nakayama Arthur?”  You asked, making sure that you got the name right.

No matter how many times you have actually left Kiku's house, you still find yourself staring out the window in amazement.

Nakayama is a town located just north from the one where Kiku lives in the outskirts of.  You believe that the city’s name is Tohokufukushidaimae… or something along those lines.

“That is correct.  It is one of the few places that have not yet been reconstructed since the tsunami that happened last year, so I consider it a perfect spot for our investigation to take place at.  I hear from Kiku that this site is one of the most active in the paranormal section.”  Arthur responded back to my question.

“Woah dude did you just say ghosts?”  Alfred said between a gulp.  You could tell that he suddenly began to shiver in his seat.

Both your brother and you looked at Alfred with a confused expression, although Arthur immediately turned his eyes back to the road before him.

“Um… No.  I said nothing of the sort… I said paranormal, not ghosts.”

It took Alfred a minute to respond.  He began to laugh, never looking in either of your directions.  He had his hand covering one side of his eyes, obviously trying to cover up his nervousness.

“You guys totally fell for it!  What, did you think that I was afraid of… of… Ghosts…?”  The end of his sentence was unsure.

“You haven’t changed a bit Alfred,” You said while trying to hold in a laugh.

“Hey what is that supposed to mean?”  This time he did look back.  Grabbing onto the headrest of his chair, he spun around.  He looked a bit embarrassed, a light pink color dusting his cheeks.

“Nothing, nothing.”  you said, waving my hand in a vertical matter, your fingers spread out.  You had a smile on my face.

You see, ever since Alfred was a little kid, he has had this fear of ghosts.  He would always freak out while watching even the most unrealistic paranormal films.  Now it seems like he still would, but he has learned to mask it.  He is playing the macho roll at this moment, and will probably keep it up the whole time you are out.

It took only about fifteen minutes to get to your destination.  The voices in the car subsided as your surroundings started to lose its liveliness.  The moment you passed the 7-eleven that was closest to Nayakama was when everything went dead.  There was little to no color.  Everything was dirty, damaged, abandoned, piled up and just everywhere.  You could make out things like sofas, cars, televisions, stuffed animals and possibly a few bodies within the junk.  You heart began to ache looking at was around you.  To think of how many lives were taken in this incident... All of the families, children, pets, lovers and everyone else that had great lives ahead of them were ended in split seconds.

The area that we were in looked like it used to be a very populated neighborhood before the Tsunami hit.  There were so many abandoned houses, many of them torn down with the occasional two or three that still stood here and there.

Over all, it is a very scary environment in your opinion.  It did not help that the sun has been gone for at least four hours by now and that the moon was nowhere to be seen.

"... We are here..." Arthur said quietly.  At this time, you were located in just about the dead center of Nakayama.  He removed his hands from the steering wheel and used his left one to turn off the engine.  It was dead silent after his statement.  None of you moved.  You do not know about the others, but you were giving everyone here a moment of silence.

Arthur was the first to move.  He opened his left door and exited the car, circling his way around to the trunk.  He opened it and took out the large backpack where he has all of his equipment organized.  You couldn't see him do this, but you recognized the sound of the zippers on his pack dangling.

Both Alfred and you made your way out of the car, and out into what seemed like a horror film.  The typical cloudy night, no one in sight, and the light, ominous breeze that went through was no longer just something on the screen.  Oh no

.  It was way real, and you were in it.  Definitely not the place you'd like to stay on vacation.

Alfred quickly returned to his normal self.  You still felt a little sketchy about the place.  The whole scenery freaked you out.  It was pitch black; the only light that there was came from the indoor car lights.

"So dude!  What are we going to do first?"  Alfred yelled out, his loud, booming voice echoing through out the area that was void of any visual life.

Arthur placed a plastic, gloved hand over his mouth, shutting him up.  More like leaving him talking incoherent words into his hand.

"First thing is first.  You must be quiet unless I say otherwise.  If you speak, I will lock your bloody buttocks in one of the abandoned houses.  Alone.  Understood?" Arthur told Alfred very sternly, his emerald green eyes proving the seriousness of his statement.  Alfred just nodded in response, not wanting that to happen.

"Good.  Second," Arthur began.  He turned towards the trunk and placed his hands above the piece of metal.  He quickly brought his arms down, shutting the car door. Immediately the light inside turned off, leaving you in pure darkness.

A scream came from both Alfred and you.  You clung onto Alfred for dear life and felt him do the same in return.  You hid your face in his brown, bomber jacket that he was wearing, scared out of your wits.  You could not see a thing, but feeling your cousin's strong arms around you got you feeling a bit more relaxed.

"Don't be scared you two!  Nothing has happened yet! Here, take these flash lights"  Arthur said.  Since you could not see past your nose, you supposed that he took out two flashlights.

Both Alfred and you let go of each other at the exact moment when Arthur finished saying the word flashlight.  Then the both of you lunged at Arthur, using your hands to search for what he had offered.

The second you felt a cold, tube like object, you felt relief come over you.  You let out a sigh and quickly clicked the button that turned on the light-producing device.  Vision returned to your (eye color) eyes.  You have never missed the ability to see so badly.

"Thank you Arthur" You said, looking at your older brother as if he had just saved your life.

"Yeah thanks dude."  Alfred added, flicking his flashlight on as well.  As the beam of light appears, you saw his blue eyes begin to shine behind his glasses.  He smiled greatly, pointed the beam up and began to twist his wrist slowly.

"I feel like a total Jedi with this thing!" Alfred said as he began to make light saber noises and swung his flashlight back and forward.

He suddenly turned around to face you; a look of seriousness was on his face.  You felt a bit uneasy from his sudden change of emotion.

"______... I am... your cousin!!"  He yelled, reenacting the scene from Star Wars, pretending to be Darth Vader.  He then brought his arms down quickly and passed the beam over your left hand.

A light chuckle left your lips, placing your hands on your hips.   Your cousin is a nut.

Arthur just ignored the childish man and began to walk off into the mess of things.  You followed after him, dragging Alfred along with you, not wanting it leave him by himself.

“We are on a blind investigation, so I do not know where we will get the most activity.  I could not point out a specific area where I believe we should begin." Arthur said to you both who were following him.  He stopped walking and turned around to look at the two of you.

"Let's walk around and try to find a good place to start.  If either of you two feel odd in anyway, please tell me.  It could be used as evidence or could help with locations."  He said, turning back around, shining his flash light down, in front of his feet and continued to advance.

Both Alfred and you nodded and followed after the man.  You were sort of happy that you would not start this thing off right away.  Your heart was pounding very fast.  You were ruing the moment when you come into actual contact with the entities.

You walked around what used to be a neighborhood for a good ten minutes.  Each step that you took increased the feeling of nervousness that was taking over your being.  Waving your flash light around in different directions gave you the chills.  You were afraid that when you flashed the beam onto one of the standing houses you would see someone standing inside, staring at you from the window, or at one of the piles of garbage and a body would come flying out at you.

In situations like these, your mind goes crazy with ideas of what could happen.  You end up scaring your self more then everything that surrounds you does.

The silence that had engulfed you was broken as Alfred began to speak.

"Is that...?  Yeah it is!  Score!"  Your loud cousin spoke with excitement clear in his voice. He was crouched down, his back facing you.

"What is it Alfred?" You asked, curious as to what he found.  You pointed your flashlight at Alfred, trying to see him better.

"Did you find anything useful?"  Arthur added, hoping that Alfred might have found something that could officially start the investigation.  He also pointed his beam of light onto your cousin, his eyes shining in excitement.

"I found a ring!  I bet that it is totally worth somethin' good!  It’s got gold outlining and… WOAH! It had a diamond that looks almost like the ocean on it!" he said, not turning to look at neither of you.  You noticed his arm move as he began to jiggle the ring, attempting to pick it up.

Arthur groaned in annoyance.  His eyebrows were pointed downwards and a frown adorned his face.

"Leave it be and keep looking out for anything that will help us!" Arthur responded, turning back around, continuing on in the direction he was headed a second ago.  You watched him turn around a large pile of... What ever it was made out of.  You then lost sight of him.

Ignoring what your instincts told me, you decided to stay with Alfred.  You were probably just as intrigued in the ring as he was.

"Darn it feels stuck on something!" Alfred grunted, pulling on the ring, trying to get it out.  You could tell that he was using lot of strength since his muscles became tense and more visible.  "Come on ______!  Help me pull!" he said, pausing his tugging to look at you.
You crossed your arms, looking him in the eye.

"A 'please' would be nice..."

"Oh quit acting like your annoying brother and tug!" Alfred complained, continuing to pull.

You quietly laughed and put the flashlight into your pocket.  It wasn’t that big, so you had no problem fitting it in.  You then wrapped your arms around Alfred's muscly torso.
"On the count of three.  One... Two... THREE!" Alfred yelled.

You both tugged as hard as you could.  You were not as a strong as he was, but you play your share of sports that requires upper arm strength, so you weren’t too useless.

"It budged!"  Alfred yelled, obviously excited.  He tightened his fingers around the ring.  "Come one!  One more time!  Are you ready?" he asked you quickly.

"Yup!" You responded back, tightening the grip that you had on Alfred.

"All right!  One, two, three!"

You pulled once again, but this time you flew backwards and fell onto your butt.  An 'Oopht' sound came out of your mouth as you felt something heavy fall onto you.

“Alfred!" you squeaked out.  It is quite difficult breathing, let alone talking with someone who weighs twice as you do crushing your lungs.

"Oh!  Sorry dudette!"  Alfred said, quickly getting off of you.  "But I got it!" he yelled while pumping his fist in victory. He began to do a little dance in his place.

"Cool!” you said excited.  You picked your self up from the cold ground that was beneath you, straightened out your dark blue sweater you were wearing and wiped off the dirtied part of your jeans.  “Well, let's see it!"

You both hovered over his hand, looking at it intensely. He opened it extremely quickly and made the same noise as when Link opens a treasure chest in the Legend of Zelda videogames.

You suddenly felt your mouth drop and a shriek come from your lungs.  Alfred also let out a horrified yell as he threw what was in his hands onto the floor.  He then rapidly wiped his hands on his jean pants.

Another yelp came from your as you saw something from the corner of your eye.  Something came running over in your direction, toppling over some metal object in the process.  You looked over to see that it was your older brother, who looked absolutely terrified.

“What happened?  Are you two all right?” he asked, panic one hundred percent noticeable in his voice.

You could not get any words to come out of your mouth.  You were stunned by what you had just seen.  You just stood there wide-eyed and your mouth still hung open.  It seems as your (four years older than you)-year-old cousin was also in state of shock, as he had not done a thing either.

Arthur dropped his flashlight and took hold of both of your shoulders.  He shook you back and forward, trying to get you to respond to his question.

“_________! IS EVERYTHING ALL RIGHT?” he yelled.  He was horrified.

You still couldn’t bring your self to say anything.

“_________! ____________!!”

“T-t-t-t-t-t-t-th-th-th-the…” Alfred began.  He was stuttering at an extreme rate.

Arthur looked over to him, desperate for an answer.

“What is it?”

Alfred didn’t finish his sentence.  He just pointed over to the object that he had recently chucked.
